Routine Pleasures

Sam's Bunch by Manny Farber
Jean-Pierre Gorin's, Routine Pleasures, from 1986, is a mildly engaging film essay that juxtaposes model train enthusiasts in Del Mar, California with paintings by Manny Farber. I confess that I was more interested in the sections about the great critic and painter, so parts of the film dragged for me. Gorin, most famous for collaborating with Godard, calls himself a former Marxist in this film, but seems to be using a dialectical method to explore American geography and mythos. The result is a pleasant, but overlong feature.
